Media Language: What techniques does this trailer use to persuade an audience to see the film?
The genre of the film is romantic drama and actions due to the love triangle and within the love triangle are two enemies that would definitely led to action between the characters. Throughout the trailer the pace of the sound track/music is very fast this connotes the action that is going to take place within the film and the tensions building within the film about the love triangle. The fast paced sound track/music also connotes the target audiences’ preference of action and drama between lovers. The main focus throughout the trailer is on the character Bella Swan this connotes the narrower target audience being females aging from 12-21.
Representation: How is gender represented in the trailer?
In the film Bella Swan is represented as a dominant character as she is not influenced by any thoughts besides her thoughts. Female gender is represented as much focused on their goals especially about love which shows the powerful of actions impact on the outcomes of others lives.
The male gender represented as two sided as on Edward’s Cullen side the gender is represented as a sexual attraction also with Jacob Black’s character can be seen as a sexual attraction towards the target audience.
However it changes afterwards as Edward Cullen is seen as a loyal and obedient character to the rules set in front of him. He is also portrayed as mysterious character as he appears and disappears in the trailer which is part of the trailer however is has not much to say which makes understanding his personality much more difficult.
Jacob Black the character is portrayed as caring male towards his love by following her and trying to influence her thinking process against Edward Cullen. This has a negative impact on the target audience because he is the person interfering with the relationship of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen.
Audience: What target audience would be attracted to this film? Give evidence.
The target audience is mainly to be female especially teenagers due to the storyline based on a love triangle which females finding suitable to their preference and the age being teenagers because this is the primary age that females go through the love process which will appeal to their thoughts. The complications in the love triangle and the male lovers would target teenager females which allow them to image themselves as Bella Swan in the love triangle throughout the film. However as the film is about love is can appeal to a wider audience of elder women because the male characters can appeal to their taste.
Institutions: What Hollywood values can you identify in this trailer?
I think that film is a medium budget film production as there were debut actors and actresses in the first film series however the first film brought the actors and actresses recognition in Hollywood. This change of status of actors and actresses would affect their pay on the next films. However the film used a range of special effects that were repeated and continuous meaning a low/medium budget film production also through were a lot of local shots used throughout the trailer.
However the film location gives a sense of cost as through were a range of beautiful scenes that connotes a medium budget film and the number of cast needed to move to the different locations.
