Uncertainty - Movie Trailer: 2010



 

The pace of the non-diegetic music at the beginning of the trailer is very slow and calm that connotes the relaxed relationship between the characters in the shot. Also the introduction to the trailer is music; this creates suspense to the storyline of the film for the audience because they are not familiar to the characters in the shot that forces them to link the music atmosphere to the characters’ relationship.

The script that the characters follow is the opposite meaning to the pre-production words on the screen which connotes the next actions by the characters is to be the stimulus to storyline which could lead to an adventure and action.

The camera shots used during the beginning of the trailer are medium shots of the characters at face level to the characters; this connotes to the audience that they can connect to the characters at the same level of social class. Also the medium shot allows the audience to witness the tension in the characters’ facial expressions without any distraction from the surrounding setting.

The camera shot of the characters and the coin in between them connotes to the audience that the coin flip is going to change the next actions the characters’ take into the storyline changing the outcome of the storyline. Also the camera shot captures the bridge tower with two sections to enter and exit; this connotes the characters next actions are to be apart from each other physically or mentally or both.

As the coin is flipped the camera moves from one side of the characters and to the other side that connotes to the audience that the coin has made the separation of the characters physically or mentally or both.

As the characters are aware of the result of the coin flip; the director focuses on the physically distance created by the coin, the characters run the opposite direction of each other. This stimulus the audiences’ thoughts on the storyline as they’re not fully aware of the change in the storyline made by the coin.

As the word “Manhattan” appears on the screen the non-diegetic music ends on a long note that connotes the effect of the changed destinies has been implicated into the storyline and the audience is to witness some of the changed destinies. As the beginning of the scene there is non-diegetic music that connotes the tension building up to the next scene.

As the characters discover the mobile phone the mentally change is visible to the audience as the male character refuses to give the mobile phone to the cab driver however the female has the opposite thought. This scene also connotes that the mobile phone is to be the reason that the characters are to take an adventure and action as the scene is given significance as it is a focus point to the protagonist characters.

As the male character answers the phone that he discovers the diegetic sound of the male on the other end of the telephone call; his voice connotes seriousness of situation this also is a bridge to the next scene.

The next scene with the Asian man walks to the stranger and shoot him has non-diegetic music that connotes to the audience that discovery of the mobile phone is to be the trigger to the adventure and action in the storyline. The tone of diegetic voice and the sharpness of the voice on the phone also connote the seriousness and the trigger of the adventure and action of the storyline.

As the protagonist characters realise the situation has reached very dangerous to their safety they run; the next scene is the flashback of the coin flip this connotes the change of the characters’ destinies also the coin flip is the result of the situation.

As the word “Brooklyn” appears on the screen the non-diegetic music begins that connotes to the change of atmosphere because the protagonist characters are surrounded by their family and relatives that makes them feel safer from the situation also the audience is made comfortable to the new characters.

The camera angle used at the family table feast all connotes stereotypical family atmosphere to the audience that allows the audience to connect to the family and feel sympathy for the protagonist characters.

As the characters realise their relationship is becoming distanced by the situation; they connote to the audience they are trying to recreating old feeling in their relationship by their physically positioning towards each other. The characters use an iconic image of a regenerated relationship by the female character leaning into the male character’s body.

As the words “Where do you go” appear on the screen; this connotes to the audience that the adventure is continuing with more tension and pace for the characters destinies and the coin flip scene also remembers the audience that the characters’ destinies have been changed by the flip of the coin.

As the male protagonist  character looks back to see what/who is following them the camera moves into the point of view shot to capture the car door open with a man walking out in a hurry. This shot creates the atmosphere of tension that the characters are facing; the pinot of view shot creates for the audience the same atmosphere as the characters so the audience understand the situation at a first account.

The camera shot of the mobile phone text allows the audience to witness account of the level of the situation. The diegetic voice of the female character emphasis the level the situation has reached with her tone and the sharpness of the words used by the character.

The words “Who do you turn to” is the bridge between the previous scene with the protagonist characters discussing about the mobile phone situation with the protagonist female character dealing with her stress created by the situation. Also the scene has non-diegetic music that connotes to the audience that the protagonist female character is dealing with a dilemma mentally about the mobile phone situation.

At the ending of the trailer the non-diegetic music creates the pace, the atmosphere the protagonist characters are going though, action and the change in the thinking pattern the protagonist characters have adapted to due to the mobile phone situation. The fast change in the camera shots and angles creates the ending of the situation and the action due to the situation.

The Mise-en-scene throughout the trailer is stereotype of the American couples also the location of the American couple. The capture of the elegant bridges and the skyscrapers all are stereotype of American city location. The amount of people in the chase scenes or the shoot out scene also is a stereotype of American cities. The noises in the shoot out scene of the cabs and the horns also are stereotype of American cities.
